30 Under 30/Dirty 30 — By Michael French
BROWSE —
Inc.’s “Cool, Determinded, Under 30″ cover piece is…interesting. The digital component is a little more comprehensive (and free), so have a looksy. I dunno. Inc. has always seemed like an existing CEO’s handbook, something fun that helps Grampa Munster feel hip. And after three reads, this ish is just a pet store window with a megaphone:
“Hi CEO! You wanna tap into youth?! Get ready to have your dick blown off because we’ve got your fix. Here and only here you’ll find the coolest, brightest and most determined freaks under 30! Grab ‘em fast ’cause you know these kids change their minds more than you change the password to your joint checking account!”
If We Ran It is meant to take these profiles out of the ivory tower/niche conferences and put them in the hands of the kids. What good is a “30 Under 30″ list if peeps under 30 aren’t checking it out? Hmmm? I’m sick of the co-opt and having cool, successful young people slapped on a menu for some dipshit to drool over. We need to promote the ideas of successful young people, not parade them around like dogs: “He comes from good stock. Yeah, you’ll love this one. Oh, very chic sir. Yes, very good. Fedora and everything.”
I picture a jeering buffoon in a corner office, hunched up behind his/her desk like a jumbo shrimp, scanning through Inc., looking for a way to patch up the sinking ship. We need to own the movement people, not auction it off. Oh, speaking of which:
MR and MS are speaking at The Feast this Thursday. You should go.
In other news, I hit up the Diesel “rock’n'roll circus”/30th Anniversary/”Dirty 30″ slapfest with Michael R, Bozarth the Wise and our favorite creative consultants Hugo & Marie on Saturday night. It’s taken me a couple of days to make sense of it. Long story short: The booze was free, I punched a tranny in the mouth and Shaka Kahn owned.
