Millennials in the Mist Redux/Re-Hash/Remix — By Michael French

BROWSE —

Leilani Salter, Editor of the Rankin Ledger (Rankin County, Mississippi), has constructed a great response to “The ‘Trophy Kids’ Go to Work,” entitled “What does this say about our future work force?”

Salter’s best point: “Let me make clear that this certainly doesn’t describe everyone of that generation. Most of the news department I manage falls into this age group with only four or five over the age of 30, including me. I am incredibly fortunate that no one on our staff is a slacker. Our business requires great respect for deadlines and the ability to work as a team.”

I’m glad somebody of an older generation has brought this up, and that we don’t always have to. The majority of anti-millennial dissent is generalized horse-cocky-hooey, much like most anti-any group language, basically translating to: “I don’t like these young kids and they’re attitudes. Wahhhh.”

Salter’s funniest point (regarding Alsop’s “Millennials believe they should be able to dress comfortably at work” line): “I thought we were comfortable. We’re not wearing house slippers to work but they obviously never knew of our days with pantyhose and our mothers’ days of girdles. Honestly, some in this age group make “casual Friday” clothes seem like dress clothes.

This may tick some of you off, but I entirely agree. You need to look presentable. Shower, put on some deoderant, maybe a splash of cologne and look respectable. Nobody’s listening to the dude in the “Fuck the World” t-shirt.

I’m stoked on how quickly the discussion of the millennial species has evolved over the past week. Seems like everybody and their bro has chimed in with their opinion, and rightfully so. We’re at a crossroads…
